Frequently Asked Questions

What is Irish Dancing?

Irish dancing is a captivating and energetic dance form deeply rooted in Irish culture. It combines intricate footwork, precise movements, and a unique blend of athleticism and grace. Dancers perform complex steps with rapid foot movements, while maintaining a tall and straight posture. The rhythmic patterns synchronize with lively traditional Irish music, creating an infectious and mesmerizing spectacle. Irish dancing includes various styles like solo, group, and step dancing.  Irish dancing fosters a sense of community and cultural pride. It symbolizes the spirit of Ireland and is an art form that continues to captivate audiences worldwide.

Where do Dancers Begin?

All Dancers begin at the same point:  learning the basics of soft-shoe dancing, i.e. foot placement, execution, carriage, timing, presentation.  Once the beginner soft-shoe dances have been mastered, dancers progress to more advanced soft-shoe steps and are introduced to hard-shoe dancing.  For younger dancers, the progression usually is during their second year of dancing; older dancers may learn the basics of hard-shoe towards the end of their first year (they may not necessarily have to purchase the hard shoes until their second year).

All dancers learn solo and team dancing.  Solo soft-shoe dances are reels, jigs and slip jigs; solo hard-shoe dances are treble reels, treble jigs, hornpipes and set dances.  Team dances can be traditional or teacher’s own choreography.

Performances?

When dancers have reached the required standard, they will participate in community performances throughout the year.  Community performances will always be a major focus of the school.  All dancers participate in the year-end show.

What do Dancers wear to Class?

Dancers should wear slim-fitting shorts, skirts, or leggings, a t-shirt and white socks. The instructor must be able to see the dancer’s knee and ankle alignment so loose fitting leg wear is not appropriate.
